First Mailing! We’re Doing It!

Last weekend, Ryan and I snuggled onto our couch and stuffed the first mailing of our Save-the-Dates.  I say snuggled because Ryan was feeling under the weather after an adverse reaction to a vaccine, and because I just like snuggling.

Each envelope was stuffed with the following items: 1) Save-the-Date bookmark made by Arie Koelewyn*. 2) A scrap of a page to protect the bookmark should anything befoul the envelope.  3) A little handwritten note by yours truly letting recipients know that the house number was incorrect on the return address.  Ryan and I were rushing through the process of getting these out before the end of the month, so in his haste, his mistyped our address and sent it to the calligrapher*.  I also put a little copyeditor’s mark on the back, so hopefully someone will see that and appreciate it.  The address that is written does not exist.

Now, I’ve been told that envelope glue has wheat in it, so I can’t lick envelopes**.  So after we filled the envelopes, I filled a bowl with water, grabbed two sponges, and came back to the nest of a couch.  Ryan looked at me like I was crazy, and proceeded to lick all the envelopes as I tried to keep up with sealing the button and string and sticker aspects.  My issue with Ryan licking all the envelopes is Seinfeld.  I’ve a very clear image of George’s fiancée getting paler and the purple coming on under her eyes as she licks all the envelopes for their wedding***.  She dies; Ryan survived wetting the envelopes.  At least so far…

This first mailing went out on Wednesday, and I know that some folks have received theirs as the traffic on this website has gone up.  I still have a fear that some are going to be returned to that nonexistent address and we’ll never know.  So we’ll send our invitation to the same address; it’ll be returned and then I feel like rubbish because they didn’t know about it in time to get everything arranged as Longmont is a happening place during Memorial Day weekend, so Ryan and I will have to put a tent up in our little xeriscape garden and put guest in there, and Mom’s backyard and front yard will also be littered with tents as there are not enough bedrooms to go around.

It’s been good to have something tangible for the wedding.  We’ve been planning things for a year now, and as we are now six months away, I’m finally starting to feel somewhat settled about things.  I know how much we have left to do.

*: We have been so blessed with many gifted friends who have helped us create a first class wedding by gifting their artistry to us.
**: I’ve since searched this information and discovered that envelope glue doesn’t contain wheat; at least according to the envelope manufacturers.  This may make me a wee bit happy.
***: This appeared in an online story about shocking character deaths on television today; Ryan wasn’t familiar with the storyline.
